How it works: Behind a flow around the bluff body arise opposite and mutually offset vortex. The vertebrae dissolve on the Edge of the bluff body and form a Kármán vortex street in the flow. The distance between the individual vertebrae is constant. The frequency with which the vortexes flow past a sensor depends on the flow velocity and proportional to the flow. The transducer detects the vortices, these are converted into an electrical frequency signal.

Advantages of this measuring principle are u.a. Almost free pipe cross-section = low pressure loss. Wide range of application in terms of pressure, temperature and density. Independent of the conductivity of the medium. High long-term stability / no zero drift.
